Kodi's Adventure - Day 129 & 130 - Islamorada, FL

Diana announced yesterday that it was time to renew two of Kodi's vaccinations and made an appointment with a local vet for today at 11:00 AM.  We decided that it would be great fun to dingy over to the vet who was located just three miles southwest of Holiday Isle on Route 1.

That was the plan as of yesterday at 5:00 PM.  As we left the boat to walk to dinner at Hog Heaven, Kodi, all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, started limping and holding her right paw off the ground.  We were concerned.  We both inspected Kodi's right leg and paw to see if there was any obvious problem and could find none.  Diana then gave Kodi a benadryl and rubbed her limb with hydrocortisone.  We then went to dinner.  Upon return, Kodi was not limping.  We were puzzled but given the proximity of the vet appointment decided that we would get insight tomorrow.

So at 10:00 AM, this morning we prepared to dingy over to the vet.  Our goal was to depart at 10:15 and we immediately encountered a minor problem.  We could not get the dingy out of the slip as a boat had pulled in next to us and with the tide up could not slip it under the dock.  Fortunately, the captain, who was in the process of transporting the new 45 foot Formula Yacht to the Miami Boat Show, was getting ready to leave.

We departed at 10:20 and running at 20+ MPH we headed north under the bridge and then west through a cut and southwest to the Lorelei Restaurant and Marina that we had visited on Sunday; a distance of five miles.  Note: The boat is right center, the cut is just below the cursor (5 ot cross) and Lorelei is in the lower left hand corner.

We docked at 10:45 and then walked a 1/2 mile to the Vet's office arriving right on time at 11:00 AM.

Kodi, surprisingly, walked right into the vet's office, which does not happen when visit our Chicago vet where she knows the territory.

The first order of business was weighing-in.  Kodi obediently sat on the scale, which showed that she now weighed 54.6 pounds; a drop of 2.4 pounds.  This suggests that the furry kid has been getting adequate exercise which was nice to know.  Note: Optimum weight for a female lab is 50 to 70 pounds putting Kodi at the low end of the weight scale.

Following the weigh-in we met the vet.  Stacy immediately established rapport with the Kodi who as always responded enthusiastically.  We told Stacy about yesterday's limping episode and after a very thorough examination, she declared that there was nothing apparently wrong.

Then she went to work giving her the shots and taking a blood sample.

We were proud of the way Kodi handled the process.   She was terrific.  Then, we said our goodbyes and no sooner than we got outside Kodi started limping.  We immediately walked back inside and showed the limp to Stacy who again did a thorough examination and again found nothing physically amiss.  So we started walking back to the dingy and mysteriously the limp disappeared.

We walked back to the Lorelei stopping at a pet shop and super market along the way.  Arriving at 1:00 PM we had lunch there dining alfresco as we do most of the time.

We departed Lorelei's and returned to Holiday Isle where we adjourned to the pool.

Note: The limp has returned on and off two more times.  We will keep you informed.
