Land Between The Lakes - Day 19 - Green Turtle Bay Marina and Grand Rivers

Did I mention that Green Turtle Bay Marina and Resort is a spectacular place?  I suspect I did. Here's further details about the marina/resort and the Grand Rivers area.

After 17 days and 645 miles of travel, we had came upon on our first "we got to stay here place."  We debated traveling another 270 miles to the America's Great Loop Cruiser's Association (AGLCA) rendezvous at Joe Wheeler State Park in _____ or staying here.  It was an easy decision.

Here are some views of Green Turtle Bay Marina and Resort.

The houseboat in the above photo is close to 80 feet long and a floating home on the water.  There are at least 75 houseboats in Green Turtle Bay (which has over 600 slips).

So, after exploring the marina, we put the dingy on plane and zipped at 20 MPH onto Lake Barkley and then using a channel just east of the marina that connects Lake Barkley to the Tennessee River and Kentucky Lake.  Our goal was to visit Lighthouse Landing, the marina of the Tennessee River.  It turned out to be a sailing harbor; 100%.

We walked out to a gazebo just east of Lighthouse Landing where we posed for photos with Kodi

Then we walked across the road and into the town of Grand Rivers.  Our first stop was the Badgett Playhouse where we purchased tickets for shows on Friday night (Smoke on the Mountain) and Saturday night  (Variety, a Branson type musical review).  Tickets were $19.99 each.

The Badgett Playhouse
Grand River, population 300 plus, was founded around 1880.  Click here for a quick history.  The central business is Patti's 1800 Settlement, which is a facinating operation (far bigger than the Blue Owl that was the foundation business at Kimmswick, MO).  Patti's consists of three restuarants, a christmas shop, other shops, a children's playlot, a convention facility and a wedding chappel.

After lunch at Patti's, we walked through town and discovered that Green Turtle Bay was just over the hill; literally within 1.5 miles of Lighthouse Landing.  Fall colors are starting to emerge in this neck of the woods as shown by the photo below.

Late in the afternoon, after a brief stop at the IGA market for groceries, we returned to Guided Discovery.

Did I mention that the weather was AGAIN sunny with light winds and moderate temperature?  19 days in a row but who's counting?  I am and loving every day.

  1. We never had the time, but I have wanted to explore the parks in the "Land Between the Lakes". There is also a State Park Marina just on the other side of Kentucky Lake from Lighthouse Landing. I think it is Kentucky Dam Village Resort. We never had a dinghy when we were there, so never investigated. I always heard that the fuel there was a bit cheaper than at Green Turtle, but I guess that does not matter to you now.

Did I tell you about Irvin Cobb Marina? It is on the Blood River which branches off Kentucky Lake at Tennessee River Mile 52. The fellow who owns it is originally from Illinois and was really helpful to us when we were bringing the boat up from Florida. You probably won't want to stop there since he is only about 30 miles farther and there isn't really much to see or do there, but good to know about in a pinch. He happened to stop by the harbor late this summer, and he told us he has uprgraded quite a lot since we were there five years ago.

  2. Les... what a wonderful expose' of Grand Rivers and Green Turtle Bay. Thank you for staying with us, for taking the time to shoot the photos, and for describing our little sandbox on the river system playground.
